Leadership Development

Building leaders, one girl at a time.

CEOs, Scientists, Athletes, Artists, Mothers, Leaders…
What do so many women of achievement have in common?
They’re Girl Scouts.

Girl Scouting provides the nation’s most successful leadership and positive values experiences for girls, ages 5 – 17. In Girl Scouting, being a leader is not just about holding a position of authority; it is a philosophy of respect for self and others, community service, and philanthropy. Through activities that build self-confidence and encourage creative decision-making and teamwork, girls develop real-world leadership abilities that will serve them throughout their lives. If you ask today’s women leaders where they got their drive, their spirit and leadership skills, more than half will tell of their powerful experience in Girl Scouts..

In Girl Scouts, girls soon learn that they can take the lead in whatever they choose to do. Every girl has the potential for success, and Girl Scouting helps girls tap into and maximize their unique potential. Girl Scouting’s fun and educational program activities and events encourage girls to:
• Discover – Understand themselves and their values, and use their knowledge and skills to explore the world.
• Connect – Care about, inspire, and team with others, both locally and globally.
• Take Action – Act to the make the world a better place.

It’s not just what girls do, it’s also how! Girl Scouting is girl-driven, and girls work in partnership with caring and trained adults to determine and plan the kinds of activities they want to participate in. Girl Scout program activities are experiential, encouraging the gradual development of leadership skills as girls reflect on their experiences and apply what they learn to new situations.

Girl Scouts learn to work together cooperatively. Whether they are planning a fun girl-focused event or a service project to benefit their community, they see firsthand the benefits of shared goals and teamwork.

The entire Girl Scout program is based on the timeless values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law. As a result, girls form their own beliefs and values, learn to consider the ethical aspects of situations, and are committed to social justice and community service and action.

Over the long term, the Girl Scout experience puts girls on a life-long path to:
• Lead with courage when they speak out on issues they care about and take active roles in their communities;
• Lead with confidence when they make the most of their strengths and feel empowered to make a difference in their lives and beyond;
• Lead with character when they act with integrity and compassion, making decisions that promote the well-being of themselves and others;
…as they make the world a better place.

The Girl Scout Council of Orange County is part of a vast sisterhood of nearly four million girls and adults who belong to the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Girl Scout alumnae are more than 50 million strong today, and they represent 64% of the women listed in Who’s Who of America and two-thirds of the women in Congress.
